Spring Newsletter | Five and twenty years!

I saw my first peonies last Saturday, I think the buds are as gorgeous as the full flower. It instantly made me feel better about the world. Absolutely zero logic for this burst of happiness but the joy was immediate and I refuse to ruin it with rational thinking. There is currently enough existential gloom and ego crazy dictators of doom to last our lifetime. I jest with a heavy heart and know I shouldn’t binge on the news but I can’t seem to stop. Which is why I now try my hardest to offset my news addiction and world misery by mentally acknowledging the simple, honest pleasures in life, by tipping my hat to the daily little wins.

My latest little win has been the discovery of a cloud appreciation page on Facebook. Yes, super geeky but-oh-so absorbing! A wormhole I love disappearing into. Fellow cloud appreciators ( who, unlike me, all have actual cloud name knowledge ) post the most amazing sunrises and sunsets with incredible cloud formations, from all over the world. And here’s the thing, the clouds from Derbyshire are just as fabulous as the ones in Texas, New Zealand, Sweden or India. It’s another reminder that we share the same skies. If you use Facebook, search for The Cloud Appreciation Society. Honestly, it’s addictive. My teenagers mocked my geekiness but are now secretly looking to take the perfect cloud snap to post on the page!

Little wins everywhere you look

I know I’m preaching to the converted when it comes to the obvious joy of having a dog. I am definitely one of the lucky ones who can have their hound present as they work. It really is pure gold to glance up from my designing and see my handsome beastie curled up in the window seat. Yet, he nearly always has one eye half open, alert for any potential snack breaks. He’s a funny one, a street dog from Romania but with an aloofness that suggests some ancestral blue bloodline. Maybe a royal lineage that befell hard times a century or so back. There are moments, usually during recall, where his aloofness borders on arrogance and he plainly lets you see he is tolerating cuddles and fuss.

However, lately I’ve noticed a small change in his Lordship’s behaviour. We celebrated his sixth birthday recently – we’ve had him for five and a half years. In that time he’s gone from, at best, an annual ‘Okay, today I will actively seek out a cuddle but it will be short and if you breathe it will end immediately’ to standing and eyeballing you intensely. Eventually I realised his stare wasn’t walk or food related but that he was ACTUALLY requesting a sofa snuggle. It made me really laugh because he then curled up at the other end of the sofa! So although he is still as far away from being an affectionate lap dog as is caninely possible, there is a definite thawing and a desire to be fractionally closer. That, in my books, is another joyous daily little win.

A snapshot of my work colleague!

Oops, this is meant to be a newsletter and I’m waffling on about peony buds and clouds. And I’m in real danger of digressing even further into chatting about fairies and Ai.  I’ll share those new artist discoveries in a separate post because, well, they are amazing!

So, what’s the Big news at the Little dog?

Well, two things immediately spring to mind, the first being that this year marks five and twenty years of us. Truly astounding, a moment to celebrate but also, if truth be told, perhaps a bit of a poisoned chalice. In our industry, exciting and new is always a ‘must’. Although we have carved ourselves a small, little dog niche it can also sometimes be a been there, done that pigeon-hole. Like many running small businesses, you become adept at being a ‘Jack of all Trades’ – master of maybe one and okay at some!  As a sibling family business, the last few years have been particularly tough, on a work and personal level. The stuffing hasn’t been fully knocked out of us but Life has had a jolly good go at it!  And yet, here we still are and most importantly, the three of us still love what we do. Another little win?

To celebrate this twenty-five-year milestone I wanted to mark the occasion with a positive. Therefore I am thrilled to say we have joined forces in a partnership with the animal welfare charity Dogs Trust. The collection is called A Dog’s Life and will launch this September.

If you’d like a sneaky peek at the illustrated book featuring Dogs Trust rescues and their stories of survival and happy fur-ever afters, click on the link below. The aim is to raise £25,000, so advance warning, we will be calling on your assistance to spread the word! I’m super excited as I will be visiting Dogs Trust’s Loughborough centre next week and as part of the agreement I am allowed to sit with some puppies. Honestly cannot wait!!!

A Dog’s Life | The story so far

I have learnt so much during this project. Everything from new watercolour skills to the Brinks Mat gold robbery  ( so much podcast bingeing ) to the inner workings of Dogs Trust. But that could fill another two blogs, so on this occasion I will spare you the joy!

Coming Soon

With the book project and delivery frustrations taking up so much time, we’ve been a bit lax at letting you know what’s arriving soon. Delayed stock delivery has sadly become the new normal since the pandemic and we are at the mercy of shipping companies, port issues and good old every day acts of God. And of course, when it comes to order priorities, the Little Dog is so far down the list, you’d be scrolling for days before you found us.

Anyway, here is a glimpse at what we are hoping, after two delays already, will be arriving in July. Brand new wash bags & zip purses. We’ve also got lots of fresh new designs in our china gift mug, glasses case and packable bag collections arriving in the autumn, fingers and toes crossed!

One of your new product suggestions a while ago was for t-shirts. I haven’t forgotten and have been nudging some design ideas around in my head, so hopefully I’ll get them onto paper before too long and ask for your opinions and feedback again. And if there is anything you think would be a nice addition to our website, we always love to hear your thoughts and ideas. It’s amazing how tunnel-visioned you can become when you are in the thick of it.

Summer Yard Sale

A date for your diary.  The weekend of July 1st and 2nd. We had hoped to hold this last month but time has raced away again. The older I get the faster the months seem to pass!  We are in the midst of a studio rejig and warehouse move which is the perfect chance to declutter and let go of two decades of hoarding show displays, vintage props and end of line stock. Plus all the family and friends furniture that has found its way into Little Dog storage over the years. There is a lot!

We’ll pop the larger items on our Facebook page and marketplace and send an emailer with details closer to the date, but if you like a good rummage and have an eye for a bargain, there will be lots to root through. And Derbados is stunning in July so treat yourself to a road trip. Actually, I might have exaggerated slightly about the beauty of Derby but we do have an info sheet on where to find Derby’s hidden gems.

And then hopefully we’ll hold an autumn yard sale, this time just cards and gifts, late September, early October, perfect for those hunting for Christmas and birthday bargains.

Special Offers & Sale

I always feel a discount code is needed for those of you that make it all the way to the end of one of my newsletters, think of it as a stamina reward! So here is a 20% offer code, for use on any item (excluding Sale or OOAK creations) on the website and if you haven’t shopped with us for a while, do look at the 50% off and card sale sections because we’ve got some lovely end of line bargains, well worth a browse I promise.

Your exclusive newsletter code is maynews and it is valid until the end of June 2023.

I’ll leave you with a preview of the our dog 2024 calendar and diary covers while I crack on with the cat diary artwork. Thank you as always for your time, kind words and support and most importantly for being part of our trading  journey. It’s been fun, exciting, unpredictable, humbling, at times down-right awful but rarely a chore.

Best wishes and take care

Anna Danielle

  1. Someone sent me a little dog card many many years ago. Being a crazy dog lover(4dogs 1cat) I looked for your contact details on the back of the card and my shopping journey began. I have 2 Australian labradoodles and would love something in future that features this breed.

    • That’s so lovely to read, thank you! I’ve just painted two labradoodles for the Dogs Trust book project and one was an Australian labradoodle. Such a lovely looking dog x

  2. Hiya. I have just had a ‘Manypaws’ doggie overnight bag delivered this week and it’s so lovely that I am keeping it for myself. Daisy and Belles will have to make do with a Waitrose bag yet again!
Look forward to seeing your collaboration with The Dogs Trust and THANKYOU for sharing your talent with us. Jane xx

    • Waitrose bag! That’s made me giggle. Alison does our sewing and her standards and talent are amazing. She’s been working on some new shapes which I hope to pop on the website next week. They are really nice!!!

  3. Hi
I’ve been keeping an eye out for when to send entries in for your calendars etc. I thought it was around May last year. Is there not a date for it this year?
    Kind regards
    Sue

    • Hello Sue, this year is slightly different in that the calendar will be part of our A Dog’s Life|Dog’s Trust collection so I’m only taking submissions for the cats this year. However, I have got a little plan up my sleeve for August which might appeal so keep a look out! Best wishes, Anna Danielle

  4. I was wondering whether you could do scarves with your beautiful designs on? I have a large scarf collection but have never found the perfect pooch themed one!

    • Hello Claire, I’ve just done a new multi dog print which could well work as an all over and therefore a scarf so thank you for the suggestion!

  5. Love your designs. They’re so relative. We had to say goodbye to our beautiful rescue lurcher, Scooby, last June and it still hurts. Your card ‘I think I might have accidently eaten everything’ is the absolute spit of him ears an’ all. Though is wasn’t a bad thief. Only once did he steal one out of 6 sausages cooling on the kitchen table. I instantly blamed my husband for the thievery – it couldn’t possibly have been our angelic hound! Thank you for keeping that memory alive x

    • Hello Lisa, I am sorry to read that, the hardest bit about dog ownership is the difference in the human to dog life spans. You’ve picked one of my favourite breed mix and therefore favourite drawings. I do love a lurcher. I love the way they lean against you and kinda dip and curl their head to sort of look back up at you. They are all leg and nose! Thank you for leaving a nice message, best wishes, Anna Danielle

  6. Anna my friend and I have always loved your cards and our dogs. We initially found them in an old barn that sells walkers food and welcomes dogs. I have a nine year old cavipoo – champagne colour- because his dad was a very small poodle and his mum a small cavi he is about as small as they get but full of bounce and bright as a button. Would love a cavipoo series!

  7. Hi there.Im an advid fan of your lovely collections .I do however struggle to find anything portraying mini labradoodles. Arthur my mini lab is the biggest joy in my life. How about a nice pin or broach collection ?

  8. Hi, yesterday (27 th ) in our local garden centre, while waiting to pay for my goods, there was a book promotion on the counter.
